How To Write The Perfect IG Bio

Facebook
Twitter
LinkedIn

As a small business owner (or maybe just someone considering taking the leap!), you’re probably trying to learn everything you can to make it a success and to stand out. Whether you’re planning to take one of our courses or in a a completely different industry, we want to share a few tips with you starting with something super-important but simple – your bio!

IG is the leading social media platform and an incredible tool for reaching new customers when used correctly. However, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for businesses to reach buyers without either paying FB through the nose or having to depend on short-term, inefficient wins like giveaways or engagement groups. For this reason, it’s more important than ever that when someone lands on your page they become immediately engaged, find info quickly and can streamline their booking process as much as possible. If the booking process is a funnel, your bio is the very top of it and your goal is to coax that buyer further towards the point of purchase as quickly as possible. Failure at any step in the funnel results in a ‘bounce’ – in other words, they lose interest and bounce out of your funnel and over to a competitor’s page instead!

  • Keep it simple, clear, short and concise. You only get 150 characters and 4 displayed lines to explain to your buyers these very important points –

            Who are you?

            What do you sell/do?

What is your business identity and how are you different?

            Where you are?

            How do I book?

That’s not many characters at all to answer all of that and make a good first impression – don’t clutter with emojis or fancy fonts unless that’s really in line with your business personality, in which case still keep it as minimal as possible.

  • Try to include a searchable term in your display name where possible (this is different to your @handle). Make sure it includes your actual business name or you’ll miss out brand identity, online searches and it also looks a bit too desperate. Don’t just say ‘Manchester Lash Specialist’, say ‘*Brand Name* | Lash Salon’
  • Location/ Address – we all know how unbelievably annoying it is when you see a post on IG, you decide to book/buy but you can’t tell whether they’re down the road from you or on the other side of the planet. If you have to DM and wait for a reply to find out where they are, you’re probably going to change your mind by the time they reply or will have booked with a competitor whose info was clear and booking system was easier to use. Enter your FULL correct address and check that the link works!
  • CALL TO ACTION – I’ve capitalised this because it’s the most essential part of your bio. I don’t want to know what awards you’ve won, what your best-selling cake is, when you opened, the owners name or your chihuahua’s birthday… I just want to know HOW I BUY – give me a clear command before I decide my money is better off staying in my pocket. Click here? Call us? Book button? walk ins accepted? No DM’s?
  • In settings, make sure your fb page is connected correctly to make post sharing easier. Also, make sure your ‘category’ is correct and hidden – just to keep your bio neat.
  • Instagram doesn’t allow us to attach links to posts, so there is only one place on your whole page where you can – your bio. Use this link efficiently. ‘Link in bio’ works well and if you’re really ready to get technical and track your link clicks, look into bit.ly.
  • Fill in as many contact options as possible. A landline number (buy a VoIP number that connects to your mobile if you don’t have one) and an email address that matches the domain of your website will look much more professional and trustworthy to any potential buyers. Make sure your action buttons are set up correctly and easy to use.
